Falabella: the world’s smallest horse with a heart of gold
Small in size, huge in character: the Falabella is one of the most fascinating and rare horses in the world. Standing just a little taller than an average-sized dog, this incredible miniature horse wins over enthusiasts and breeders alike with its elegance, intelligence and gentleness. But take note: the Falabella is not a pony. Despite its small stature, it possesses all the physical characteristics of a true horse.
In this article, we explore the history, characteristics and interesting facts about the famous Falabella horse, a unique breed that continues to captivate the equestrian world.
What is Falabella?
The Falabella is considered the smallest horse in the world. It stands on average between 70 and 80 centimetres at the withers and has perfectly balanced proportions, typical of a horse of normal size.
A differenza dei pony, che presentano corporature più robuste e arti più corti, il Falabella conserva una conformazione elegante e raffinata. È, a tutti gli effetti, un cavallo in miniatura.

Thanks to its calm nature, the Falabella is often used in pet therapy, educational activities and as a pet.
The origins of the Falabella horse
The history of the Falabella is relatively recent and has its roots in Argentina. For over 150 years, this extraordinary breed has been bred at the famous Recreo de Roca Ranch, owned by the Falabella family, from whom it takes its name.
It all began in 1845 when Patrick Newell, an Irishman who had emigrated to Argentina, noticed some small horses drinking from a river alongside horses of normal size. The animals belonged to some local indigenous tribes.
Intrigued by their unusual stature, Newell spoke to the tribal chief about purchasing a few specimens. He was told that these horses were believed to be afflicted with what the locals called ‘dwarfism’. Despite this, Newell recognised the potential of these animals and began a meticulous programme of genetic selection.
As early as 1853, he had succeeded in developing a new breed with clearly defined characteristics, giving rise to what we now know as the Falabella horse.
The nature of the Falabella
Anyone who has been lucky enough to meet a Falabella knows just how intelligent and affectionate they are. They love human company and form close bonds with their owners very easily.
They are curious, lively and highly adaptable horses. Despite their small size, they have a strong personality and a balanced temperament.
Per questo motivo vengono spesso scelti anche per:

- hippotherapy programmes;
- pet therapy;
- company on educational farms.
