HORSE RACING: Federico Tesio, the genius who changed racing forever
Anyone who loves horse racing cannot ignore the name Federico Tesio. He dominates the history of horse racing not only in Italy but internationally, as a true visionary. Born in Turin on January 17, 1869, and died in Milan on May 1, 1954, Tesio was a breeder, scholar, and politician, but above all, he went down in history as the greatest exponent of English Thoroughbred breeding.
It is no coincidence that he is still remembered today as the “Leonardo da Vinci of horse racing” or the legendary “Wizard of Dormello“.
A scientific approach to running
A key moment in his career came in 1906, when he happened to meet an Oxford professor reading a text on Mendel’s theories. From this, Tesio realized how crucial the transmission of genetic traits was in the breeding of racehorses. By meticulously studying the pedigrees of Derby and Oaks winners, he came to conclusions that were innovative for the time, revising established practices of traditional breeding.
This is where the legendary Dormello-Olgiata line was born, destined to mark an era in horse racing. These fields produced horses that would go on to write the history of world horse racing:
The evolution of breeding and major collaborations
In 1932, a crucial step marked a new phase: Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta purchased 50% of the company for the considerable sum of 4 million lire. This led to the creation of the Tesio-Incisa company, which gave further impetus to breeding thanks to the importation of high-quality broodmares from abroad, further strengthening the competitiveness of Italian horses in major international races.
Behind the scenes of the myth
The legacy of horse racing
Even the Turin racecourse, now sadly closed, bore his name, reflecting the deep connection between Tesio and the history of Italian horse racing.
A timeless master
Federico Tesio didn’t just breed winning horses: he changed the way people thought about horse racing. His legacy lives on today in every pedigree study, every major stud farm, and every horse that takes to the track with the aim of surpassing its limits.
