Il cow sense è una delle doti più affascinanti e misteriose che un cavallo possa possedere.
Con questo termine si indica la naturale attitudine del cavallo nel comprendere e gestire il bestiame, anticipando i movimenti di una mucca o di un’intera mandria.
È una sorta di “sesto senso” che permette al cavallo di collaborare con il cavaliere nel controllo degli animali, reagendo in modo istintivo ma preciso a ogni spostamento.

A natural gift, but also the result of selection

Cow sense cannot be taught completely: it is  an innate predisposition, which can, however, be developed and refined through training.

Some bloodlines have been selected precisely for this quality: intelligent horses, quick in their movements, with excellent reflexes and a cool head.

La razza simbolo del cow sense è senza dubbio il Quarter Horse, nato negli Stati Uniti dall’incrocio tra mustang e purosangue inglesi.
I cowboy dell’Ottocento — i veri “ragazzi delle vacche” — selezionarono questi cavalli per il lavoro quotidiano con il bestiame nelle grandi praterie.
La loro agilità, scatto e capacità di leggere i movimenti del bestiame li resero insostituibili.
Il nome “Quarter Horse” deriva infatti dalla loro eccezionale velocità nel quarto di miglio, distanza su cui erano imbattibili nelle corse di frontiera.

Oggi il lavoro con il bestiame non è più una necessità quotidiana come ai tempi dei ranch del Far West, ma da quella tradizione sono nate alcune delle più spettacolari discipline western, in cui il cow sense è ancora protagonista.

Cutting

 Cutting is the discipline that best highlights the horse’s cow sense.

During the competition, the pair must “cut” a calf from the group and prevent it from returning to the herd.
The horse works almost independently, reading the animal’s movements and reacting with lightning-fast sprints, tight turns and rapid changes of direction.

Working Cow Horse

The  working cow horse, or  reined cow horse, combines the precision of reining with cattle work.

Team Penning and Ranch Sorting

In  team penning  and  ranch sorting, teams of two or three riders must separate numbered calves and drive them into a designated pen in the shortest time possible.

Here, the horse’s cow sense blends with teamwork: coordination, speed and perfect harmony between all the pairs are required.

Il cow sense non riguarda solo l’istinto del cavallo, ma anche la connessione invisibile tra cavallo e cavaliere.
Un binomio esperto riesce a comunicare quasi senza comandi visibili: basta un leggero movimento del corpo o un cambio di energia perché il cavallo reagisca, prevedendo ciò che il suo cavaliere desidera.
È una danza di fiducia e istinto, dove il cavallo non è mai un semplice “mezzo”, ma un vero partner di lavoro.

Cow sense today

Although working with herds is less common today, cow sense continues to be  a valuable and admired quality  in the world of Western riding.

Training and developing this skill means keeping alive the tradition of the ranch horse and the philosophy of respect, collaboration and harmony that underpins American riding.
