Anyone who loves horse racing <\/strong>cannot ignore the name Federico Tesio<\/strong>. He dominates the history of horse racing not only in Italy but internationally, as a true visionary. Born in Turin on January 17, 1869, and died in Milan on May 1, 1954, Tesio was a breeder, scholar, and politician, but above all, he went down in history as the greatest exponent of English Thoroughbred breeding<\/strong>. <\/p>

It is no coincidence that he is still remembered today as the \u201cLeonardo da Vinci of horse racing<\/em>\u201d or the legendary \u201cWizard of Dormello<\/em>“.<\/p>

A scientific approach to running<\/strong><\/p>

Federico Tesio fu tra i primi a comprendere che le corse al galoppo non sono solo spettacolo o fortuna<\/strong>, ma il risultato di una combinazione complessa di genetica, selezione e ambiente. Fin dall\u2019inizio cerc\u00f2 nella letteratura scientifica<\/strong> quella che molti definivano la \u201cformula segreta\u201d per allevare cavalli campioni. <\/p>

A key moment in his career came in 1906<\/strong>, when he happened to meet an Oxford professor reading a text on Mendel’s theories. From this, Tesio realized how crucial the transmission of genetic traits was in the breeding of racehorses. By meticulously studying the pedigrees of Derby and Oaks winners<\/strong><\/strong>, he came to conclusions that were innovative for the time, revising established practices of traditional breeding. <\/p>

Dormello: the heart of Italian horse racing<\/strong><\/p>

Convinto che il successo in pista nascesse gi\u00e0 in allevamento, Tesio progett\u00f2 un modello ideale. Nel 1898<\/strong> fond\u00f2 la Scuderia Federico Tesio<\/strong>, individuando a Dormello<\/strong>, nel comune di Dormelletto (Novara), il luogo perfetto: un terreno naturalmente umido e morbido, ideale per lo sviluppo atletico dei giovani puledri. <\/p>

This is where the legendary Dormello-Olgiata<\/strong> line was born, destined to mark an era in horse racing. These fields produced horses that would go on to write the history of world horse racing:
Nearco<\/strong>, considerato uno dei pi\u00f9 influenti stalloni di sempre, Bellini<\/strong>, Donatello II<\/strong> e soprattutto Ribot<\/strong>, imbattuto in 16 corse e vincitore di due Prix de l\u2019Arc de Triomphe, ancora oggi simbolo assoluto di eccellenza agonistica.<\/p>

The evolution of breeding and major collaborations<\/strong><\/p>

In 1932<\/strong>, a crucial step marked a new phase: Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta <\/strong>purchased 50% of the company for the considerable sum of 4 million lire<\/strong>. This led to the creation of the Tesio-Incisa<\/strong> company, which gave further impetus to breeding thanks to the importation of high-quality broodmares from abroad, further strengthening the competitiveness of Italian horses in major international races. <\/p>

Behind the scenes of the myth<\/strong><\/p>

Accanto a Federico Tesio operava una figura spesso meno celebrata ma fondamentale: la moglie Lydia Fiori<\/strong>. Fino al 1942 compil\u00f2 personalmente il registro genealogico delle fattrici dell\u2019allevamento, il celebre \u201cLibro Rosso di Dormello\u201d<\/strong>, oggi ancora custodito nella villa di famiglia. Un documento prezioso che testimonia la cura maniacale e la visione a lungo termine che caratterizzavano l\u2019intero progetto Tesio. <\/p>

The legacy of horse racing<\/strong><\/p>

L\u2019influenza di Federico Tesio \u00e8 talmente profonda che ancora oggi il suo nome vive nelle grandi corse al galoppo<\/strong> e nei luoghi simbolo dell\u2019ippica. Tra le competizioni pi\u00f9 importanti a lui dedicate ricordiamo:il Federico Tesio Stakes<\/strong> a Baltimora (Maryland), il prestigioso Premio Lydia Tesio<\/strong> all\u2019Ippodromo delle Capannelle di Roma, il Premio Federico Tesio<\/strong> all\u2019Ippodromo di San Siro a Milano. <\/p>

Even the Turin racecourse, now sadly closed, bore his name, reflecting the deep connection between Tesio and the history of Italian horse racing.<\/p>

Federico Tesio didn’t just breed winning horses: he changed the way people thought about horse racing<\/strong>. His legacy lives on today in every pedigree study, every major stud farm, and every horse that takes to the track with the aim of surpassing its limits. <\/p>
