Sebbene attivo per soli diciotto mesi, dal 1860 al 1861, questo servizio postale \u00e8 diventato una vera leggenda. E lo \u00e8 diventato soprattutto grazie ai suoi protagonisti: <strong>cavalli infaticabili<\/strong> e <strong>corrieri abilissimi<\/strong>, capaci di attraversare gli <a href=\"https:\/\/book.horsevoyage.it\/it\/24\/stati-uniti\/moreideas\">Stati Uniti<\/a> in condizioni estreme.  <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Service as fast as the wind<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pony Express connected <strong>St. Joseph, Missouri<\/strong>, to <strong>San Francisco<\/strong>, covering a distance of over <strong>3,200 kilometers<\/strong>. Una velocit\u00e0 sorprendente per l\u2019epoca, resa possibile solo grazie alla resistenza e all\u2019agilit\u00e0 dei cavalli utilizzati. Questo permetteva ai corrieri di mantenere un ritmo impressionante, attraversando deserti, montagne, tempeste di sabbia e territori pericolosi. <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Who were the Pony Express couriers?<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riders had to be <strong>light, brave, and fast.<\/strong> They could not weigh more than 55 kilograms and worked hard, covering 120\u2013160 kilometers a day. They carried only the essentials with them:  <\/p><ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><li><strong>the backpack<\/strong>, the bag of letters;<\/li><li>a water bottle;<\/li><li>a Bible;<\/li><li>a horn to announce arrivals at stations;<\/li><li>weapons to defend themselves from bandits or attacks by hostile tribes.<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the approximately <strong>80 couriers<\/strong>, one name stands out and would become legendary:<strong> William \u201cBuffalo Bill\u201d Cody<\/strong>, who began riding for the Pony Express at just 15 years of age.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their salary was very high for the time: <strong>$25 a week<\/strong>, while sending a letter initially cost five dollars, an enormous amount.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dangers, attacks and heroic deeds<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pony Express faced numerous difficulties. Between May and June 1860, attacks by the Paiute tribe in Nevada caused disruptions, the loss of horses, and the killing of several employees. <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite everything, the service managed to survive until the arrival of the intercontinental telegraph on <strong>October 24, 1861<\/strong>, which marked the end of its activity. Two days later, the official announcement of its closure arrived. <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, around <strong>250 original letters<\/strong> survive, precious testimonies of that era of courage, dust, sweat, and endless gallops.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A legacy that still lives on<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pony Express is not just an episode in American history: it is a tribute to the <strong>extraordinary collaboration between horse and rider<\/strong>.
