Sardinia: horseback riding on the Costa Verde

A wild journey in Sardinia: discovering the Costa Verde on horseback

The last trip I had the privilege of taking took me to explore one of the most fascinating places in Sardinia: the Costa Verde. Accompanied by a select group of journalists and six truly exceptional horses, we went on a three-day trek, starting from Arbore and ending up in Piscinas, a corner of paradise that still retains its wild and unspoilt charm.

Every day brought us new excitement: from breathtaking views of the crystal-clear sea to the wild landscapes of the inland areas, every corner spoke to us of a primitive island, far from the most popular tourist routes. Our journey took us to iconic places such as Marceddì, Torre dei Corsari and Pistis, with its dunes that look like they have been painted on the sand.

Marceddì: the fishing village

One of the most evocative moments of the trip was arriving in Marceddì, a small fishing village that seems to have stood still in time. The white houses, the small harbour overlooking a sea that changes colour with every glance, and the scent of freshly caught fish immersed us in an atmosphere of tranquillity and simplicity. In this corner of Sardinia, life seems to follow the rhythm of nature, and every corner tells stories of ancient traditions linked to fishing and the sea.

Strolling through the narrow streets of Marceddì is like taking a step back in time, where time seems to stand still and every daily gesture has the flavour of authentic life. The sea lapping the coast, fishing boats moored in the harbours, the laughter of children playing on the sand: everything speaks of a Sardinia that is still genuine and unspoilt.

Piscinas: the sandy desert

Our journey continued to one of the most incredible places I have ever seen: the Piscinas desert. The tall, majestic sand dunes stretch for miles, creating a landscape that seems straight out of a dream. Here, Sardinia’s wild nature reaches one of its purest forms, with the silence broken only by the rustling of the wind caressing the dunes.

Riding across these dunes on horseback is an indescribable experience, a journey through time and space, where the desert landscape merges with the sea glimpsed on the horizon. The contrast between the white sand and the blue sea creates a picture that seems to have been painted by nature itself. It is the ideal place to reflect, to feel small in the face of the majesty of the earth, but also immensely fortunate to be able to experience it.

The trek took us to a corner of Sardinia that few people really know, a place where the beauty of wild nature manifests itself in all its power. Between the sea, the sand and the land, it was impossible not to feel part of something bigger, a journey that enveloped and enriched us with every step.
